Air Force
Norway has compulsory national service for all males 18 and up. You can refuse, do civil service, or join the green machine. I joined the green machine, and was promptly issued a blue airforce uniform, having proven to be too nearsighted and out of shape for the army.
Three months basic training at Værnes, followed by twelve months of service as an office rat at Bardufoss AFB. I ran the education office along with one other guy. He did the economics courses for the soldiers who wanted to start on their MBAs after finishing. I took care of the computer courses, running Word Perfect or Lotus 123 courses three or four nights a week. It was teaching, and I got paid extra for it (basic, unqualified teachers scale pay - but it was a lot more than soldier pay, which is index regulated to equal the cost of a pint and a pack of smokes a day).
